Becoming an Indianapolis Historic Preservation Commission (IHPC) local historic area is collaborative grassroots effort. The process begins with property owners establishing the need and desire to protect their neighborhood’s historic assets and overall character. Once property owner’s document that need and desire, they present their case to the IHPC (Phase I). Historic Washington Park is currently in Phase I. (Click the images for a larger view.)

If the IHPC agrees with their assessment, then IHPC staff works collaboratively with the neighborhood to actively engage all property owners and other stakeholders to draft a historic area preservation plan (Phase II). Through a series of public input sessions and workshops, stakeholders collaboratively work together to develop a preservation plan that is beneficial to all. Phase II is depicted below.
